Degas’ dancers were often prostitutes. Season tickets could be bought to get to know the dancers more intimately. See the man in the background? Men would commonly pay extra for front row seats to ‘get in on the action’. We view the dancer from a raised perspective, in what’s probably a very expensive box. Most contemporary analysis of Degas focuses on the ‘male gaze’ and its objectification of women. via
